Things to do in Dresden

Exhibition „Dresden 1945“ from 14 January 2017 to 11 June 2017 at Panometer Dresden

„DRESDEN 1945 takes you on a journey through time back to the Elbe metropolis in the immediate aftermath of the bombing raids in 1945. The view from the Town Hall tower reveals the ruins of the destroyed city, from which columns of smoke are seen rising. The project broaches the issues of tragedy and hope in Europe. It does not merely show the tragedy of Dresden, but draws attention to the interactions of European war-torn history. By 1945, not only had a large number of European cities been destroyed, such as Rotterdam, Coventry, Stalingrad and Warsaw, but also numerous German cities. The accompanying multimedia exhibition provides an introduction into this period. While paying tribute to the reconstruction – by including contemporary witnesses, Asisi nevertheless questions post-war urban planning concepts. The panoramic experience is rounded off with the accompanying music by film composer Eric Babak and sound effects reflecting the era and the setting in the scene.“*

bullet_red     La Bohème, 8 June 2017

Opera, Giacomo Puccini, Italian with German supertitles

„The world of Paris’s penniless bohemians is an unhappy one. The air is freezing in the garrets above the city’s rooftops where they live. Four friends, Rodolfo, Marcello, Colline and Schaunard, intend to see out Christmas Eve in a cafe when suddenly their dire financial situation improves. Rodolfo stays behind when the friends go out to celebrate. A meeting between him and his neighbour Mimi helps to thaw out the ice-cold garret. Exchanging intimacies, they find themselves falling in love. But this burgeoning romance is afflicted by misery and death. Rodolfo quickly finds himself unable to look after an ill Mimi, and a grotesque argument leads to their separation. When, after some months, they meet again, Rodolfo and his friends only have time to grant the dying Mimi one last wish.”*

Konstanze is betrothed to Belmonte, who naturally tries to help her escape – unfortunately without success. In the end the magnanimous Pasha grants them their freedom. Mozart’s »Abduction« is full of popular numbers such as the Janissaries’ Chorus, Pedrillo’s »Now for battle« or Konstanze’s »Tortures unrelenting«, which until today remain some of opera’s most famous arias.“*
